Chuck Wennerlund Has Passed

We are very sorry to report that long time Men's Club member Chuck Wennerlund has passed away.

Here is the obituary from the Star Tribune:

Charles A. 'Chuck' Wennerlund

Wennerlund, Charles A. "Chuck" Chuck passed away on Halloween at the age of 81 at home in Ham Lake, surrounded by loving family. He is survived by his wife of sixty years (and high school sweetheart), Claudia (née Bauer); children, Kelly (Michael) Lyden, Kim (Greg) Bents, Kip (Lisa) Wennerlund, and Kerry (Craig) Zupko; eleven grandchildren, Elizabeth (Michael Richards) Lyden, Emmalie (Joe) Brudzinski and Noah Lyden, Jordon (Sara) and Juston Bents, Elina, Annika and Karsten Wennerlund, Quade, Quinncy, and Chloe Zupko; sister Diana Duffy; in-laws George Duffy, Joan and Duane Blaska, Phyllis Cooper; and close friends, Jackie and Jerry Hall. Charles was born to Peg and Arthur in St. Cloud, grew up in Anoka, and remained an Anoka guy his entire life. He excelled at athletics, collecting fourteen varsity letters and becoming an all-state quarterback. He graduated from Hamline University and later earned a Master's from College of St. Thomas. Chuck had a 34-year career in teaching and guidance counseling at North St. Paul HS, Coon Rapids HS, Northdale JHS, and Anoka HS. Chuck started the first basketball program at Coon Rapids HS, and he coached high school basketball, football, tennis and golf in various capacities for many years. He also shared his love of sports by coaching his kids' youth teams. In retirement Chuck could often be found at Greenhaven Golf Course in Anoka, playing or working, or hanging with good friend, Mike Clark. Chuck was a loving and devoted husband, a wonderful father, and a fun grandpa. He loved to get down on the floor and wrestle when the kids and grandkids were young, and he was the proud papa in hosting extended family vacations to Mexico, Florida and northern Minnesota. Chuck lived a full life. He gave and received a lot of love. He is remembered fondly and will be deeply missed. A private celebration in memory of Chuck will take place when the pandemic threat recedes. In lieu of flowers, the family would request memorials be directed to Sharing & Caring Hands.

Golf season in MN ending soon

Anoka Men's Club Members:

October 31 is the last day to post Minnesota scores into the handicap system. All rounds played in Minnesota between November 1, 2020 & March 31, 2021 are not posted in the handicap system. Any round played in a state where the handicap system is still open (i.e. Arizona & Florida) are to be posted in the system using your GHIN number.

It was a tough end-of-the-year golf season due to cold weather and snow, but many of us still were able to get a lot of rounds played. Green Haven Men's Club had 10 players who posted more than 90 rounds this year with one player posting 161 rounds and 2 players at 125 & 123 posted rounds (as of 10/28/20).

With the weather looking good for the next week or so we all hope to get a few more "practice" rounds in before the course shuts down for the 2020 season. Let's hope and pray for a COVID free 2021 in which we can play without fear of COVID over our heads.

A special thank you to Larry and the ProShop crew for a great 2020 season - especially understanding how to deal with the regulations of this past summer.

Golf season has arrived...with COVID-19 restrictions

As you have heard, Governor Walz has opened Minnesota golf courses beginning Saturday, April 18. While there will be a few COVID-19 playing rule changes at Green Haven as well as all other courses, the MGA has determined that ALL scores are still to be posted. Even with the changes, be sure to individually post your scores on the new GHIN app that is available. At this time, the Pro-Shop computer will not be available.

The best way, and the way Anoka Men's Club wants you to post scores, is to post on your phone or personal computer using the hole-by-hole app. By posting hole-by-hole the program will adjust your score according to your handicap. If you post by total, you will need to adjust your own score. Basically, you can post a double bogie PLUS your handicap for that given hole. If you get a handicap stroke on a given hole, you can post a triple bogie ... par + 2 + 1 handicap stroke (ie par 3 = 6) ... if you get two handicap strokes on a hole, you can post a quad ... par + 2 + 2(par 5 = 9) ... if you do not get a handicap stroke on a hole you can post a double bogie ... par +2 (par 4 = 6). And with handicaps changing every day, you need to know your handicap every time you play ... which is why hole-by-hole would be the best way to post.

Other COVID-19 rule changes include:

1. Social Distancing is required - we are able to operate to the extent that social distancing is followed

2. 1 rider per cart - so we will ask "If you can walk please walk so someone who can't walk will still be able to play". At this time you will not be able to put 2 bags on a cart.

3. Please arrive less than 20 minutes prior to your tee time to alleviate any congregating near the 1st tee.

4. No more than 5 people in the golf shop at any time. Please observe social distancing at all times!

5. Online payment, although not required is encouraged. www.greenhavengolfcourse.com and click the payment link

6. After play, we ask that you leave immediately. No congregating in the parking lot at any time! Do not go to your car's trunk and have a 19th hole cocktail alone or with your friends.

7. Hole #7 is under construction (new maintenance building) so if you go into the construction area it will be considered Ground Under Repair (GUR). You take relief where you entered the GUR and then follow the normal drop procedure that GUR allows - with no penalty.

8. There will be no rakes in the bunkers so we will be playing bunkers as a similar GUR with some restrictions. You may lift your ball and find a smooth place in the bunker or smooth out a place in the bunker and place your ball - no closer to the hole - no penalty. You may also play the ball as it lies, again, without penalty. While the grounds crew will be maintaining bunkers as usual, daily use without rakes could result in GUR conditions.

9. The Spring Kick Off is going to be played SUNDAY (the 26th) but it will have to be tee times instead of a shotgun. Entry deadline is Thursday April 23 at 5pm and teams/times will be sent Friday. Please only sign up if you know that you can play.

10. The 9 & 18 hole leagues as well as the Spring Combo will be delayed. Presently, we are looking at the first week of May for the leagues and the last Thursday in May for the Spring Combo. Presently, all other events are still on the schedule as shown on the 2020 Anoka Men's Club calendar. More information will be sent. At this time we need to determine how scores will be reported in lieu of the COVID-19 virus regulations.

11. The hole will be altered to allow for the ball to be "in" a hole that is just below the green surface - making it easier to retrieve the ball without touching the cup or the pin. The pin is NOT to be touched at any time.

12. If you normally keep your clubs, shoes, or other golf equipment and clothing in the locker room, you will be able to get it out to play. HOWEVER, you must take your clubs home with you ... the locker room will NOT be available to be used as a normal locker room until the COVID-19 social distancing rules are changed.

GENTLEMAN - IF WE DO NOT ADHERE BY THESE RULES AND PLAYING REQUIREMENTS THEY COULD RESCIND OUR PLAYING AND CLOSE THE COURSES. PLEASE FOLLOWING THESE COVID-19 CHANGES UNTIL WE ARE GIVEN AN ALL-CLEAR OR RULES ARE CHANGED TO REFLECT ANY NEW REQUIREMENTS.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Pat Murray, Anoka Men's Club Handicap Chairman (patrickjamesmurray@comcast.net).

Yellow Tee Option for Men's Club Events

Some members have expressed interest in being able to play from the yellow tees for Men's Club events. It is possible that participation in Men's Club events could be higher if that choice is made available.

Therefore, a yellow tee option will be offered on a trial basis Thursday, May 23, and the May 27 Memorial Day Tournament for:

a) Players with a green course handicap of 18 or higher, OR
b) Players age 65 or older regardless of handicap

Your course handicap will be adjusted based on USGA procedures.

If that's of interest give it a try, and please be sure to provide your feedback to the pro shop or board members.

    3/2/19 Election Results Update:

    Secretary: Eric Przybyla
Board Members: Barry Deziel and Brett J. Nelson

Superintendent's Corner

By Ole, after a visit to the Green Haven Golf Course Superintendents Equipment Shop mid-December 2018.

New Green Mower in 2019

Good news from the equipment shop! A second new generation electric green mower will be added to the fleet this year. Golfers will feel the full impact of the updated equipment in 2019, with the ability now to put the advanced cut on all greens. These new cutting machines will be used every day in 2019, except on top dressing days.

Peak Speeds

With the addition of the second advanced generation mower we can look for increased green speed consistency in 2019. For Men’s Club Championships, the Men’s Club Putting Championship and during Larry’s Pro Am event is when we can expect greens speeds to peak. It proves to be a challenge for Mike Brual, Certified Golf Course Superintendent and his team, balancing green speeds vs. desired pace of play. Despite, his 2019 Agronomic Plan is set for our key events and will be watched and adjusted as needed. Mike shares he uses “special stuff to get it to peak”. Green Haven green speeds run 8-9, and sometime may reach 10 on the stimpmeter, a device used to measure the speed of a green. Every digit speed increase over 8 can add 15 minutes to a golfer’s round.

Ball Washer Scrub

The on course deep green Deluxe Par Aide ball washers recently returned from a full restoration. Par Aide is located in Lino Lakes, Minnesota. The ball washers are sent out every two years for a complete restoration inside and out. Mike estimates the current ball washers are between 10-15 years old, but out of the box it looks new. Golfers will notice the stiffness of the new internal brushes and the green shine on the outside. Ball washers are located on the odd holes on the front nine, even holes on the back nine. Each golf cart is also equipped with a ball washer. The towel dip bucket is also a nice extra; it’s in its usual spot.

Cross Country Ski Trail

Trail grooming is almost underway. The crew grooms the Green Haven 5k cross country ski track and the ski track at the Anoka Nature Preserve. Grooming is performed after snow falls. A one foot base is required to get the track going; at writing Mike says there is currently little or no base to report. Mike’s team started grooming the trails in 2013. They use a special Arctic Cat snow machine with a “Grooming Special” set up. It is cooled differently and geared low for the drag and equipped with a shovel rack.

Irrigation Pump Performance Declining

The golf course irrigation well pump’s performance is declining. Watering occurs for the golf course overnights during the growing season. The watering window is fixed sun down to sun up, and the pump is not keeping up to the 1,000-1,100 gallons per minute required. The pump will be inspected and parts replaced as needed come spring. Once the process is completed the pump will be back to full service. We won’t see this and may just notice fewer sprinklers running during daytime hours. The irrigation pump is located behind a square fence near the path East of #16 tee.

Daily Movement on Course Adjacent Properties

Almost daily movement is being reported on properties surrounding the course for the large scale City of Anoka re-development plans that could ultimately benefit the golf course. Large single family homes along 16 and townhomes along 15 are expected. I asked Mike for the driving range in his mind’s eye granted anything was possible. The interesting style of target greens and the short game spaces he described are a thing of beauty. Golfers should start to see major changes to the areas adjacent holes #15 and #16 in terms of dirt work and construction in early 2020. Its hopeful resources from the project will flow to the golf course.

Hogan’s Last Lap

Hogan, the loyal pup commonly seen running along Mike’s work cart is in declining health and may not be seen come spring Mike reports. Named Ben Hogan’s Apex, Mike brought Hogan with him to Green Haven and proved to be a key asset in the battle of effective goose control. The Green Haven lab may have taken his last lap around the track and chased his last goose.

Early Spring?

Word from the shop on the weather outlook is to look for a warmer than normal winter, with average to slightly below average precipitation. Let’s hope that nets us an early spring. Cheers!

Superintendent's Corner

Frost delay.jpg

Expect Spring Frost Delays

Greenhaven Certified Golf Course Superintendent Mike Brual is ready for Spring Frost; in this edition he shares why sometimes delaying start times proves critical to our golf experience and the health of the asset that is our golf course. One new frost delay benefit for golfers is we should be able to find a “good hot cup” in the new restaurant when the news of frost delay comes. Let’s approach those times with a new understanding of what is occurring in the golf shop and the pressure building down the hill. Thanks to Mike for his time and insight in sharing new information about the golf course and its Turf Management and Maintenance Operation. As for the hot cup, time will tell.
— Chris Olson

As winter starts to give way to spring-like temperatures, the desire to hit the golf course intensifies. It also signals a change in golf course management activities that can affect one’s game and the condition of the course.

Here in Anoka and many areas of the country, golfers occasionally face frost delays in the spring, thus pushing back starting tee times. When frost is present we delay play and maintenance until the frost has melted. This is done to prevent damage that affects the quality of the playing surface and could potentially be very expensive to repair.

Frost is basically frozen dew that has crystallized on the grass, making it hard and brittle. A grass blade is actually 90% water, therefore it also freezes. Because of the short mowing height and fragile nature of the turf, putting greens are the most affected by frost. Walking on frost-covered greens causes the plant to break and cell walls to rupture, thereby losing its ability to function normally. When the membrane is broken, much like an egg, it cannot be put back together.

As Turf Managers we do not like to delay play, but are more concerned about turf damage and the quality of conditions for the golfer. Frost also creates hardships for our maintenance operation as all course preparations are put to a halt until thawing occurs. Golf carts also can cause considerable damage, therefore staff cannot maneuver around the course to mow, change cups, etc.…
